The COVID-19 pandemic hit wellness organizations, like The YMCA of Metro Denver (the Y), particularly hard. To ensure their staff was well-supported during this time and beyond, the Y engaged Uncharted Way to improve their employee experience.
Our main goal was to improve the Y’s overall value to attract and retain top talent in the organization. The best way to achieve it? Understand what employees want most in a quality working environment right from the source—the Y team!

To kick off our partnership, we conducted 12 employee interviews to quantify and measure the cultural aspects of an ideal employer. The survey group included a variety of departments to ensure equitable representation.
After each interview, the 12 employees received a survey to verify results and establish performance scores. Performance scores helped us better understand key improvements to develop a thriving culture that positively influences employee engagement. We also analyzed impact weights, illustrating how significant attributes are or how much of the employee experience a particular attribute accounts for overall.

Through our analysis, we discovered the two largest areas for improvement: ‘work/life balance’ and ‘opportunities for growth.’ These areas accounted for 62% of the employee experience. Instead of focusing on several areas with minimal impact, our analysis helped them focus on what made up a majority of the comprehensive experience.
With precise data and a customized approach, we provided appropriate change management to the Y’s leadership team based on realistic goal-setting, internal resources, and timelines.

After implementing crucial initiatives including pathways for career progression, increased mentorship and coaching opportunities, and more, the Y saw a 17% increase in employee engagement over one year. This is incredible considering the changes were implemented during the pandemic, when wellness organizations were facing many challenges.
Our partnership also led to an improvement in employee experience performance scores across the board. The largest improvements were ‘relationship with leadership,’ ‘having a sense of community and fulfillment at work,’ and an ‘increase in decision making and openness across the organization’ which all lead to a more engaged and energized team.
